Father’s Day Weekend Recap: First Visit to See Family in Waynesville, North Carolina

Seeing family is so good for the soul! It has been since February since we have seen Drew’s family and since December since we have seen mine. While we FaceTime often with family, nothing replaces visiting in person.

This past weekend, we had our first trip to see my in-laws for Father’s Day weekend. Both of Drew’s step-siblings and sister along with their significant others were there which made the trip that much more special.

My in-laws were very kind to keep the boys for an evening on Thursday night while Drew and I ventured to the Inn at Biltmore for a much needed child-free evening (separate post on our trip to come!). On Friday, afternoon we ventured to Waynesville to spend time with the whole family. We enjoyed delicious homemade enchiladas and wine with everyone on Friday evening.

Saturday morning, we woke up and went for a hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway. What started as a hike up the trail, turned into a trail run down the mountain! I am happy to report that after running more than 2 miles in the woods and over damp rocks, no one fell 🙂 In total, we hiked around 5.5 miles.

After quick showers, we went to a couple breweries in Sylva (a small town about 15 minutes from my in-law’s house). My mother-in-law was sweet to keep the boys while they napped and allowed Drew and I to join the others for a beer at the breweries. There were very few individuals at the breweries which made me feel safe and also happy that we could support local business. Side note: we were all very cautious using masks, sanitizer and Clorox.

Our evening was perfect with great conversation, food and delicious Napa Valley wine (my in-laws trip to CA in May was cancelled, but we still got to enjoy delicious wine together!). It was wonderful being able to spend time with family and hear stories from Drew’s childhood. Sunday morning, we ventured to a nearby park for throwing frisbees, kicking balls and a short bike ride for Reid. It was great to get fresh air before heading back home.

We stopped in Dillsboro on our way home to grab a quick ice cream and beer by the river. It was the perfect open air ending to our Father’s Day weekend and first visit to family.

I am so thankful that we were able to spend time with love ones and I hope we never take getting together for granted again. I hope you had a relaxing weekend and if you haven’t been able to see family since the quarantine, just know that it will be that much sweeter when you do!
